David Bowie projections on the Hirsch building in Amsterdam

Wednesday, January 8th, on the birth date of David Bowie, Leidseplein in Amsterdam transformed into a tribute event honouring the artistry of this pop star, artist and style icon. We were asked by Stage Entertainment to create an immersive experience for the première of the ‘Bowie-Week’. Our projection mapping homages was part of the opening show, presented by the main actors of the musical Lazarus. After an inspiring speech, the cast officially activated the videoprojections on the Hirschbuilding.

One of the last projects that Bowie was working on before his death on January 10th 2016, was the musical Lazarus. The musical was developed with Enda Walsh and director Ivo van Hove, who is responsible for the Dutch theatre production. Lazarus is an addition to the book The Man Who Fell to Earth by Walter Tevis. Bowie himself played Thomas Newton’s leading role in the 1976 film adaptation, directed by Nicolas Roeg.

This musical is an adventurous journey through David Bowie’s genius mind, a journey wrapped by Bowie’s hits like ‘Heroes’, ‘Absolute Beginners’, ‘Changes’, ‘All the Young Dudes’, ‘This is Not America’ and of course ‘Lazarus’.

Dragan Bakema en Noortje Herlaar, the main actors of the musical Lazarus officially opened the ‘Bowie Week’ by turning on our projections on the Hirsch building in Amsterdam. The immersive tribute is to be seen until Sunday January 12th.

David Bowie would have turned 73 this day. It has been four years since the pop star died on January 10, 2016. Bowie died one month after the world premiere of his musical Lazarus. The musical is considered to be his last masterpiece and can be seen at DeLaMar Theater in Amsterdam.

Projector setup for David Bowie tribute in Amsterdam by Mr.Beam Productions

Our technical production team delivered a full technical setup for the David Bowie tribute event. For this project, we used 3 Panasonic Laser projectors, that were installed opposite to the Hirsch building: the RTL Boulevard studio headquarters.

We used 60.000 ansi lumen projectors to transform the facade of the fashion house and Apple store into an immersive screen. Using an automated system, we were able to control the duration and progress of the projection mapping show.
